“Before I am stripped of my belongings and have no tangible hold on the memories I harvested
There is so much to do”
We hung out with UK-born Sudanese artist Asma Elbadawi in London last summer. The electric spoken-word poet, basketball player, and visual artist is an activist in her own right, having successfully lobbied a pro basketball association, FIBA, to remove their ban on hijabs.
Her work often reflects the experience of growing up as a Sudanese woman, trying to find her place in society and in sport. In this video, Asma performs her poem, “Belongings.”
